You should be aware that the most important component in a golf club is the shaft and you should play with the most flexible shaft that you can, in order to get the most distance from your clubs.

Shortening a shaft makes it stiffer. Cutting two inches from a regular flex shaft will make it a stiff flex. More than that will make it extra stiff. Children should be playing with shafts that are even more flexible than a ladies flex, not a shaft that is extremely stiff. If you are an average golfer, try to imagine what it would feel like to play with solid steel shafts that have absolutely no flex. That is how cut-off clubs feel to kids.
